- At the Program Selection Menu, position the cursor over "Beginner
- Exercises" and select this item.

- Note the default settings of the Beginner Exercises Menu: 1)
- Learning Area - QWERTY keys; 2) Exercise Type - Skill Drills; 3)
- Script Selections - 1. As you are assumed to be an experienced
- keyboarder, Tab to Script Selections and select Script 11, a script
- that includes all "touch" controlled keys. Then depress the Tab key
- until the cursor lands on "Begin Exercise."

- SKILL DRILLS

- Select "Begin Exercise" and Drill 1 of Script 11 is presented
- beneath a visual display of the computer keyboard. To begin the
- keying of the drill the Tab key is depressed. This positions the
- cursor at the first character to be struck, its related key
- highlighted on the keyboard display. As each key is correctly struck,
- the cursor moves forward to the next character in the drill line;
- however, if an incorrect key is struck the cursor stops its forward
- movement and the keyboard display visually emphasizes the correct key;
- once the correct key is stroked, the following character can then be
- keyed. Capital letter entry requires the depression of the correct
- shift key. Following completion of each 60 character line, the words
- per minute rate and number of keystroke errors are indicated by the
- Score Card displayed on the screen. The ESCape key concludes the
- timing. Press CR to select Drill 2, then press the Tab key to begin.
- After keying Drill 2 press ESCape to end the timing.

- Press the ESCape key again to return to the Beginner Exercises
- Menu; note the count of your correct keystrokes and keystroke errors
- stated at the bottom of the menu screen; this keystroke count is
- maintained until the Beginner Exercises session is concluded by a
- return to the Program Selection Menu.

- SPEED BUILDERS

- Tab to the "Exercise Type" menu area and select "Speed
- Builders." Then tab until the cursor lands on Begin Exercise and
- select this option. Note the keyboard display previously exhibited in
- Skill Drills is again on the screen; however, the drill line is
- absent. Instead, a pacing rate of "wpm 10" is displayed at the bottom
- of the screen. This indicates the rate at which the various touch
- operated QWERTY keys will be randomly displayed, one at a time, on the
- keyboard display. The 10 WPM rate can be adjusted upward or downward,
- from 1 WPM to 35 WPM, by operating the "+" and "-" keys. The higher
- the pacing rate the greater the number of points earned by striking
- the designated key within the allotted time.

- A 12 WPM pacing rate allows exactly 1 second to strike the active
- key--inadequate time to visually search for the key; at 12 WPM a
- "touch" operator should score a minimum 140 points in each lesson
- script prior to being permitted to move to the next lesson. The
- writer is unaware of a keyboarder who can maintain pace with a 35 WPM

- setting and only exceptional keyboarders (or typists) can expect to
- score 500 or more points using script 12 that is titled "All Touch
- Keys."

- At the expiration of a 1-minute interval, the Speed Builders
- timing is concluded and an "arcade" score is displayed in the WPM
- section of the Score Card. A 300 score for a keyboarder with 12 weeks
- of instruction is excellent. The formula for determining the score
- is: correct keystrokes - keystroke errors divided by 5 x pacing rate.
- Thus, 100 correct keystrokes with 10 keystroke errors, applying a 10
- WPM pacing rate, produces a score of 180. The purpose of Speed
- Builders is twofold: 1) To require the student to engage in touch
- keying; 2) To promote a higher keystroking rate.

- The learning area selection of Numeric Keypad and Cursor Keys do
- not require script selections. However, both Numeric Keypad and
- Cursor Keys are supported by the Skill Drills and Speed Builder
- activities described for QWERTY keys. In Numeric Keypad the CR, or
- Enter, key serves the function of the "Entry Clear Key" commonly found
- on electronic calculators; each keystroke error must be "cleared" with
- the CR key, then the correct key stroked.

- In Cursor Keys an elusive "Icon" moves randomly about the screen,
- with the keyboarder attempting to move the cursor in the direction of
- the icon.
